Bag free tools for gardening

Free tools for gardeners are up for grabs.

Cheddar Garden Centre is doing its bit for recycling by giving away sturdy practical garden tools handed in to its scrappage scheme.

About 200 implements were swapped for discounts on newer items during the promotion and now the centre wants to give away the gardening essentials.

Richard Truscott, of Cheddar Garden Centre, said: "The idea is to give these tools away to local people – schools, gardening groups, allotment association, and ideally young people."

The deadline for entries is Wednesday, June 16, and successful entrants will be asked to collect their tools from the store.

To enter, email your name, address, organisation name, contact details and why your school or group should get free tools to enquiries@ cheddargardencentre.co.uk or call 01934 745200.

Cheddar Garden centre expert cycles to help charity's funds grow

A plant expert has been welcomed back from the battlefields of northern France, having cycled 350 miles for charity.

Judy Holbrook, 49, from Cheddar Garden Centre, entered the Big Battlefield Bike Ride to raise money for Help for Heroes.

In total, 275 people took part in the national event, which has already raised more than £1 million.

Miss Holbrook entered the event with her niece, Lucy, to support her nephew, Tom, who is in the paratroopers.

The cycle ride took five days. The team left on May 24, and arrived home on May 31.

Arriving in Dover on the Royal Fleet Artillery boat Largs Bay, the team were greeted by crowds of supporters and a Spitfire plane, which flew in honour over the boat.

Miss Holbrook, of Claverham, said: "Completing it gave me such a great sense of achievement.

"We were delighted to finish. It was tough but we all pulled together and it was great to be part of the team."

The assistant plant manager has raised £1,600 for the charity, with a generous sponsorship given by her employers at the Cheddar Garden Centre.

She said: "It's great to raise so much money for them.

"It is now a massive charity, and it was wonderful to be part of the event they held."

The journey took the team around the First and Second World War battlefields in northern France, such as Ypres and Dunkirk, where they were present for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dunkirk.

Looking after your lawn this spring

A healthy, well maintained lawn looks gorgeous and provides an area in the garden where you can walk, play and relax. Regular maintenance will help to keep your lawn in tip top condition and
looking its best.

In Spring roll the lawn before mowing, especially if the turf has been lifted by frost, then re-cut the edges and repair damaged areas. Mid Spring is the time to apply fertiliser andto deal with moss and by late Spring you will need to start weekly mowing, adjusting your mower to summer cut height.

Nurturing your lawn this season will pay dividends and you will be the envy of your neighbours!
